May 2 – 24, 2009

“These books are among the best of the German-language titles in the field of photography,” stated the jury in honoring 23 excellent new releases in photography. Among the winners are photographers, authors, and editors, who have tackled and/or presented a photographic challenge especially well. The title, “German Photo Book Prize Winner 2009,” awarded to these books, stands for stunning photographic quality, an overall strong aesthetic impression, and for outstanding photo-techical and photo-historical achievement. The prize was awarded in the categories of illustrated photo books, photography history/theory, and photography textbooks. In the category of illustrated photo books four received the Gold prize, and 14 received Silver. In the category of photography history/theory one title is honored with Gold and two with Silver. In the category of photography textbooks the jury awarded two Silver prizes.

All winning and selected titles are part of the traveling exhibition “German Photo Book Prize 2009,” which will be shown at the Stuttgarter Buchwochen (Stuttgart Book Weeks) from November 13 to December 7, 2008. In 2009 the exhibition is on tour both in Germany and abroad. The award ceremony took place on November 14, 2008, at Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart. The German Photo Book Prize is awarded by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, Landesverband Baden-Württemberg (Association of German Book Trade, National Association Baden-Württemberg).
